History

In 1988, Gary Fish established a small brew pub in downtown Bend, Oregon with a belief that good beer brings people together. Gary founded The Deschutes Brewery & Public House as just that – a home for the public. A community gathering place, where friends, family and strangers could come together over some great food and a house-brewed pint of beer.

Bend, OR

Out in Bend, there is a mountain called Black Butte (prounounced byoot). It is located in Jefferson County and is not often missed when passing through the city of Bend. Bend, Oregon lies just on the eastern foothills of the Cascade Mountain range. Three Finger Jack, The Three Sisters, and Mt. Jefferson are all visible from the city and provide a stellar back drop to the area.

The Brew

The Black Butte Porter is one of three Black Butte Porters brewed from Deschutes Brewery. The Classic Porter is made of a 2 Row Chocolate, Wheat, Crystal and Carapils malt with Cascade and Tettnang Hops.

The Black Butte Porter pours a dark almost black brew with a creme colored head while boasting an aroma of chocolate with some later lined vanilla scents. It has a smooth feel with a drink and does not display any evidence of a harsh or dry beer. For a porter it is more full than thin, which some porters can be.

With some underlying earthy flavors, considering it’s made in Central Oregon, they are mildly pleasant and do not overtake any of the chocolate or sweet aromas the porter gives off. It’s a versatile beer which can be presented for just about any occasion. Because of it’s smooth texture and rich flavors, its best served at dinner or small social gatherings. Black Butte is not something you would find for a large quantity consumption, but straight out of the bottle, it certainly ranks high on the list of social beers for traditional get togethers and social gatherings and not your typical campus parties.

Price

The price is typical for a craft beer, where a 6 pack of the Black Butte brew runs about $10-12 at your local markets. If you like the taste of bold flavor dark brews the Black Butte Porter falls right in line for a craft brew.

Overall the Black Butte Porter has a bold flavor but is not harsh. Its smooth, flavorful, bold and full and has some underlying earthy tones. It has a limited distribution across the country, but if you can find it, and you like Porters, this won’t disappoint.
