2021 Free Agent Quarterbacks

The 2021 off season is underway, and that means free agency is right around the corner. The quarterback market has been hot with a couple of trades but that still leaves a few free agent quarterbacks on the market.

The market has been set up already with the Mathew Stafford Jared Goff trade. Two first round picks and a 3rd for a 32 year old QB who has a history of injuries. That kind of history didn’t seem to deter many teams considering the market was fairly high on the former Detroit QB.

Free Agency

The 2021 NFL Free Agent quarterback market is going to be thin considering quite a few are retiring or are in a decline of their career.

Drew Brees has called it a career after his playoff loss. Mutliple sources have reported that the future Hall of Famer retired after the playoff game, and other sources have said that Jameis Winston is likely to be in the Saints future plans at the position.

**UPDATE** Drew Brees may have not called it over yet. Video’s have surfaced which shows him training as if preparing for the season. He never officially retired, but from the playoff loss last season, his demeanor and body langauge suggested different.

Phillip Rivers announced his retirement after the playoff loss to the Buffalo Bills in the Wild Card round of the 2021 NFL Playoffs. The Indianapolis Colts also have Jacoby Brissett as a free agent, so Indianapolis may test the waters for a free agent QB.

**Update: Indianapolis has traded for Carson Wentz. The Colts gave up a 2021 3rd round pick and a conditional 2022 2nd round pick.

Cam Newton
New England Patriots HC Bill Belichick Continues To ...

Cam Newton seems to be on the decline of his career, though he may not admit it. Newton didn’t do a lot to impress Belicheck, and is likely to not be resigned.

Essentially two different personalities which collide should not be in the same head space.

I fully expect that Cam Newton will not be the first QB sought after in free agency, but at some point he is likely to sign somewhere.

Dak Prescott
Dak Prescott on national anthem: I'd never protest during ...

Dak Prescott is another interesting name to watch. It is likely that Dak will not hit the market and get the Franchise Tag from Dallas.

My real question is simply, is he worth the money he is expecting? Dak has had the luxury of a stellar offensive line, top notch WR’s and prolific RB.

But, when the time came to put it all on his shoulders, Dak did not deliver.

If Dallas does not sign the QB to a franchise tag, the only reason would be to see what the market commands for him before Dallas commits.

If the Cowboys are not committed to Prescott, they could sign Andy Dalton back for a much cheaper price and use the Dak money elsewhere.

Mitchell Trubisky
Mitchell Trubisky has a track record of not performing in ...

Mitchell Trubisky, the Chicago Bears quarterback, is likely to find another home during the 2021 off season.

Trubisky had solid performances in 2020 but was that enough to warrant another contract from Chicago?

We’ll see, but Chicago may need to evaluate their QB’s better to get more solid play from them as they develop.

Jacoby Brissett
Frank Reich Believes Jacoby Brissett Is A Top 20 ...

Jacoby Brissett has an interesting NFL career so far. He is only 29, but has been a back up to Tom Brady, Andrew Luck, and Phillip Rivers.

With the Colts trading for Carson Wentz, Brissett would be a back up in Indianapolis if he resigns with the Colts.

Brissett’s career has been a compromise of mediocrity and good football.

Brissett is not the big name flash that teams are looking for in a free agent, but if there is a level for a stop gap, Brissett can check off that box.

Ryan Fitzpatrick
Ryan Fitzpatrick, Dolphins competitive, but show they are ...

Ryan Fitzpatrick is 39 years old but he is certrainly an NFL mainstay. He has shown flashes of brilliance in his career and there are times of head scratching.

Either way, the man with the beard that all of us envy is likely to find another team for the 2021 season. Whether its as a back up or a starter, Fitzpatrick will play at least one more year.

His experience could be valued by a team that needs a seasoned QB as insurance for thier starter.
